Art in Hindsight
In hindsight, the Porsche 917 is less a machine and more a piece of industrial art—an artifact of a moment when function was pursued with absolute clarity. Every decision was governed by one principle: reduce, simplify, and go faster. Beauty was not the goal, yet it emerged as a byproduct of intent.
Even the ignition reflected this philosophy. Early Porsche race cars abandoned the idea of a traditional removable key entirely. In its place: an ultra-light switch with a fixed, drilled key—material removed simply to save weight, its form reduced to the bare minimum required to start the car. In many cases, it ceased to be a “key” at all, but a permanent, almost welded interface between driver and machine.
What remains today is a time capsule of that thinking. The RennSwitch does not imitate the past—it carries forward a moment when ingenuity was raw, solutions were honest, and function, pursued without compromise, became something unexpectedly beautiful.
