The Object That Remains
“Lazy design.”
That was our Creative Director Ed’s response when asked why we did not simply create a keypiece shaped like a 911, a wheel, or some other instantly recognizable automotive symbol.
There is a particular challenge in capturing the visual poetry of an era. To create something that feels period correct, you must first understand what made that moment distinct. You must freeze time without reducing it to nostalgia.
The 997 makes that challenge especially complex. It does not belong entirely to one time. Like every generation of the 911, it represents an advancement into the future while preserving an unmistakable connection to the past. It is both evolution and remembrance, held together in careful balance.
This is precisely why tracing the silhouette of a 911 or borrowing the shape of a wheel would feel insufficient. Recognition alone is not storytelling. Such gestures may communicate “Porsche,” but they do little to celebrate the particular character of the 997.
Legends—997 was instead shaped through a collection of references, some immediately visible and others quietly embedded within the object. Certain details speak directly to the forms, surfaces, & graphics of the 997. Others reflect the broader design language of its era, including the waterfall dash of the Carrera GT, or the iconic RS pull strap.
The ducktail inspired key stabilizer reaches further back into the lineage. Functionally, it prevents the key from rocking when placed down. Conceptually, it echoes the stabilizing purpose of aerodynamic form on the car itself. It is not an applied motif, but a detail in which meaning and utility become one.
Together, these references form our interpretation of the same delicate mixture Porsche has always maintained: past, present, and future, composed with extraordinary restraint. The result is an object that feels unmistakably connected to the 997, without resorting to imitation.
The 997 was never defined by excess. Its beauty came from clarity. Clarity of feel, intent, and purpose.
Legends—997 follows the same principle.
